Frequently Asked Volunteering Questions

Do I need to have construction skills?
We do not require that you have any prior experience in building. We do require a willingness to learn and to work. We will teach you everything you need to know. A benefit to volunteering with Habitat is that you will walk away having learned a ton of new skills.

What is the time commitment asked of volunteers?
We do not require any time commitments. We can guarantee that you will have so much fun that you will want to come back as often as your schedule allows.

What do I need to bring with me when I volunteer at the construction site?
Nothing! We provide all of the tools, materials, hardhats and safety items needed to complete a task. We encourage you to bring a water bottle, but it is not required.

What should I wear?
Both the construction site and the ReStore can be dirty. We encourage you to wear clothes that you won't be upset if they get a little dirty. We also ask that you wear a sturdy, closed toe shoes. We cannot allow flip-flops and sandals on your sites.

The volunteering scheduling page says 3:30 to 7 p.m, does that mean I have to start when you start and stay till 7 p.m.?
No. The hours on the volunteering scheduling site are the hours of operation. Unfortunately, the site will not allow you to manipulate the times. If you are volunteering for the ReStore or the Construction site, you can come any time and stay as long as you can.

What if I'm doing community service for school or for the courts?
If you are need community service hours, we ask that you sign up on the volunteering schedule site and call us at (712) 328-9476 to let us know. We will get you a timesheet that you will be responsible for tracking your hours and getting it signed on each day that you work.

What happens if the weather is bad?
We will call you as soon as we decide to cancel. For the most part, we work rain, snow or shine. If you do not feel comfortable volunteering with us because of the weather, we ask that you either remove yourself from the volunteer scheduling page or call us.
