100 Volunteers in 100 Days


June 21st - September 28th

Habitat for Humanity of Council Bluffs has a full building schedule this summer and we are seeking 100 new volunteers to help us reach our goal of completing nine homes by the end of the year. Starting Saturday, June 21 we will be working to recruit one new volunteer every day for 100 days. The challenge will end Sunday, September 28.

Not only will you learn new skills, have fun and feel good about helping the community, new volunteers and current volunteers will have their name submitted for a drawing if they volunteer at least once during the challenge.

The first home to be completed will be located at 16 E. Navajo. This home will be built with a single mother and her three children. The second home will be located at 100 Huron Circle. A single mother and her son will be moving in on completion of that home. The third home, made possible by funding from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, will be built with a family of four who were displaced as a result of the Missouri Valley floods last year.

By working with Habitat, these families will become home owners, which would not be possible through conventional means. Research indicates that moving a family out of substandard housing into homeownership provides stability for children and improves the health, safety and long-term prospects for all members of the family.

All of the prospective homeowners are excited about their future Habitat homes and are grateful for the time and effort volunteers put into their homes. Habitat homes are currently being built from the ground up with a majority of the work being done by volunteers and Partner Families working to complete their sweat equity hours. Once families purchase the homes, their monthly mortgage payments are used to build more homes in Council Bluffs.

Volunteers on the construction site can be as young as 16 years. Those between the ages of 16 and 17 must have an adult supervising them when on site. Those between the ages of 14 and 15 can help paint doors and baseboards off site as well as help with light landscaping when construction is completed. Children as young as five can volunteer too!
